The show is based on how the FBI developed the technique of criminal profiling and the way they applied it to cases in order to catch some of the most infamous killers in American history. As I’m sure you can imagine, the show features a host of gruesome and despicable characters, but none stand out more than that of the 7 foot, 300 pound Ed Kemper. A ladies man of world renown, he even curated his own brand of cologne known as ‘Arrogance’ which he would proudly carry to the ring with him, spraying anyone whose odour offended his delicate nose. Unfortunately, it seems that pretty much every member of the audience around the ring fell in to this category and he would often spray the entire crowd prior to getting in the ring. I think that’s what I liked most about this character, the utter disdain he showed for anyone he believed to be beneath him. I wanted this piece to really highlight how aloof and unapproachable ‘The Model’ was whilst also allowing his trademark ‘Arrogance’ cologne and Model badge to be the main focus. The tale was about a child who couldn’t get to sleep at night because they were too scared. Whenever it was bedtime, the poor boy was unable to stop worrying about all the terrible things that could happen while he slept. Above all else, his biggest fear was the monster that lived under his bed. Well, without going in to much more detail, it turned out he was right about there being a monster under his bed, however, it turned out that it was an incredibly friendly and helpful monster that just wanted to look after him and keep him safe at night. The monster soothed the boy, debunking his fears and providing explanations for all the sights and sounds that would usually scare him or cause him to worry through the night. With the monster looking out for him, the boy was able to drift off peacefully and enjoy a deep, soothing night’s sleep. This story carried a wonderful message and was the perfect tale for parents to share with a child who was apprehensive about bedtime, helping to put a friendly spin on traditional fears. This particular illustration shows the moment when the hero proudly emerges from his home, bright eyed and bushy tailed after a full and refreshing night of sleep. Luckily, I have never had problems sleeping. The moment my head hits the pillow, I’m fast asleep. Mexican Wrestling, or ‘Lucha Libre’ as its known, is a huge part of Mexican culture and is very different to the traditional American style wrestling. Not only is it much faster and flamboyant but more colourful too. This is particularly evident in the bright outfits and masks the athletes wear in the ring, eye catching costumes that reflect the wearer’s personality. The wrestler’s masks are especially important and have developed a great deal of significance both in and out of the ring. This character was supposed to be the star in a picture book that told the tale of a promising young Lucha who loses his father’s mask in a street fight. Despite being overpowered by a large gang, he felt such shame for having and believed himself to have disgraced his family name. As a result, he vows to never wrestle again and places himself in a self imposed exile. The rest of the story was a rip roaring adventure that told how our hero is drawn out of retirement in order to reclaim his mask, save his reputation and return honour to his family. It was a really epic story of justice and retribution and would have made for a fantastic story book! This illustration depicts the protagonist when he is at his lowest point, just getting back in shape having not wrestled in years and improvising a mask until he can reclaim what is rightfully his… Sadly, this project never quite came to fruition, but I did become rather attached to the character and I’m always on the look out for an opportunity to repurpose him or find him a new home. We then received two randomly generated words that began with our specific letter, one a noun and the other an adjective. Each participating artist was then required to produce an illustration based on their peculiar combination of words. The final outcome was a large exhibition showcasing all 26 illustrations. As I’m sure you can imagine, It was a surreal display of alphabetical fun with so many unusual images inspired by strange word combinations. The project was a really unique idea, which made it great fun to participate in! I was given the letter, ‘M’ and my surreal word combination was, ‘Miserable Mullet’, which I interpreted to be referring to the hairstyle, rather than the fish… I decide to draw a downbeat looking character sporting an outrageously large mullet. I added a forlorn expression to his face, as though he’s just been rocked by the epiphany that his beloved hairstyle may no longer be considered the cutting edge of fashion. Having said that, I did just read the the mullet is set too make a big come back in 2021! Perhaps that will cheer him up? Every year, the organisers would curate a programme of classic family friendly films and screen them at a host of specially selected locations. During the screenings, the venue staff would all be in costume and professional actors would mingle with the customers portraying characters from the film being shown. Fancy dress was definitely encouraged and the venues would be decorated appropriately to create an incredibly immersive and interactive experience for the guests. This level of attention to detail made it such such an exciting experience for the children and a great project to be involved with. The mascots I created to accompany these events were not only used on the promotional material, but also recreated as huge vinyl stickers that would be displayed in the screening venues as well as across the streets of Manchester. While working on this project, I was lucky enough to create illustrations for many of my favourite films from my youth including, Ghostbusters, Gremlins, Goonies and of course, the Indiana Jones trilogy. The illustration featured in a poetry anthology for children and accompanied a beautiful piece of poetry entitled ‘What the Dino Saw’. The poem told the story of a young diplodocus who went for a wander through the desert and all of the wonderful things he saw on his journey. It was such a charming and sensitive story which I felt had to be reflected in the illustration too. For this reason, I chose to draw the character using a traditional dip pen and ink, rather than digitally, as I felt the naive quality of my freehand work best suited the needs of the brief. As a child, I was obsessed with dinosaurs and could name them all. I probably still can now if I’m being honest. It was a wild story about a magical llama that would travel through space and time, hunting out kind and supportive people and secretly rewarding them for their selfless acts by showering them in it’s positive energy. “Behold, it’s the good Karma Llama and he’s spreading good vibes without any drama” is possibly my favourite line from any piece of poetry ever and really highlights the energy and enthusiasm that made the poem so much fun to illustrate! The poem was a really clever interpretation of the concept of karma and delivered a really positive message in an incredibly fun way. I love how it reinforces the message that no good deed goes unrewarded thanks to our llama friend who is constantly out there, hunting out good deeds, spreading joy and maintaining the cosmic balance of the universe. The article contrasted the pressure an individual may feel trying to meet the expectations they’ve set for themselves versus the beneficial effects these changes may have if they are able to stick to them. The piece identified multiple pros and cons regarding New Years resolutions but but that ultimately, the impact the resolution has depends entirely on the personality of the individual that set it. To accompany the piece, I thought I’d have a bit of fun with a streamlined Santa Claus who’s resolution was clearly to get in shape for the new year. The school had a long established crest, but felt it was too stern and serious for their newly opened preschool. As the average age of the children in attendance would be 3, the school felt a friendly update of their existing badge would be a more suitable mascot. I hand drew the falcon an attempt to make it less harsh and added open eyes and a welcoming expression to complete the child friendly make over. The eagle (Or falcon) eyed of you out there may have noticed that this bird has no feet. This was not my choice, but the school were insistent that, as the original badge didn’t include the bird’s talons, then this new one shouldn’t either. As a result, I omitted them from my final design in order to meet their wishes. Given that the show is basically a love letter to all things Super Nintendo, I wanted to create an image that reflected this. I felt the logo should be bright, exciting and structured around the machine’s iconic joypad in order to further emphasise the clever play on words in the podcast’s title. I decided to incorporate the cable in to the design, shaping it in to a love heart to further reflect the enthusiastic nature of the show. The podcast should be launching soon and will be a weekly show devoted to reviewing classic titles from that era alongside some of the more obscure releases that may have passed you by. Various local artists were asked to create a label design based on an old school finisher of their choice. For me, the hardest part of the entire process was deciding which finishing move I should choose to illustrate. With so many great ones out there it was really difficult but, after a great deal of consideration, I eventually selected the ‘Boston Crab’ as it generated an interesting image in my mind. I had a great deal of fun working on this and all of the finished designs looked so impressive together as a set. I don’t actually drink, so my complimentary four pack is still proudly displayed on my shelf at home unopened, yet still overflowing with awesomeness! Specifically, an in depth review of the ten most popular home consoles of all time. The article was incredibly thorough and considered multiple factors including: how long it was in production, the average lifespan, how many were sold globally, the over all unit price as well as the quality of titles available on each machine. As I’m sure you can imagine, there was a lot to sink your teeth in to there and, you may even find yourself surprised by their end findings. I was so please to get to draw the Game Boy as I had a really soft spot for that handheld in my youth. It accompanied a writing task where pupils were given the title and a starter sentence which they then had to develop and expand upon, writing their own story to explain exactly what happens at the ‘Cacti Party’… I was asked to produce a simple illustration showing a friendly but solitary cactus looking happy. The publishers didn’t want any more than that as they felt a more detailed illustration may impact the pupils’ responses. However, after a great deal of soul searching and introspection, I realised that I wouldn’t be able to live with myself if I didn’t include at least one type of party accessory. After further soul searching, I eventually settled upon a novelty hat as I felt this would help to convey a sense of fun. I mean, what kind of party would it be with out at least one party hat on display? Luckily, the publishers came round to my point and opted to include the version complete with zany part attire. I think they must have been charmed by how darn cute that cactus looks in his jaunty little head piece. I wanted the design to be bold and cheerful to reflect the statement on the card. Someone is receiving a confident and clear, ‘Thumbs Up’ message as a result of having achieved something positive in their life! I felt the design needed to be simplistic and bold. It is for this reason that I used a very limited colour pallet and solid, thick lines to really help the image stand out. I also included some halftone within the design to help add some texture and depth. What made this such an exciting brief to work on was that I had free reign to interpret it in anyway I liked, just as long as the finished character looked posh and snooty. Boli Knife were very adamant that the finished character must be both posh and snooty. I decided to base my design on an actual knife, anthropomorphising it and then applying the features of a suave gentleman. Adding a dinner jacket, a pair of sophisticated spectacles and some slicked back hair really helped to complete the look. At this point, the newly designed mascot was just oozing affluence and arrogance. The artisans at Boli Knife were thrilled with the finished design, deeming their new masco to be the perfect blend of posh and snooty however, they felt something was still missing. A name… We had a lot of fun coming up with a suitable title but finally, after some sublime suggestions, we finally agreed upon, the Earl of Sharpington. Since my brother and I ‘grew up’, my mum’s motherly instincts were still sufficiently strong so she selflessly decided to adopt a stray cat which she christened Alberto. Despite my mum’s best efforts, Alberto is not always the easiest to get along with and has more than his fair share of annoying habits including, begging for food, shredding the carpets and killing every rodent he encounters. In addition to these feline faux pas, the top of his list of discretions has to be his fondness for eating out of dustbins and then vomiting on my mum’s doorstep. Mum often opens the door and is greeted by the sight of Alberto sitting next to a fresh pile of cat sick with a bemused look on his face. This is the precise moment I have attempted to capture and share with you in this illustration.
